On a yearly basis, Ghanaians endure tomato shortages and fluctuating prices all around the country. To address this, MoFA, through FSRP, seeks to revamp the Ghanaian tomato industry for year-round availability of the produce by way of dry season production. This is being carried out under a $2m Norwegian support and World Bank coordination.
In all, 1500 tomato farmers are being and supported through the FSRP-Norwegian Tomato scheme, with inputs and new skills to produce 10,000 metric tons per cycle.
In effect, FSRP distributes critical inputs to farmers at selected tomato farming locations around the country, including two key varieties of climate-resilient tomato seeds and special blended fertilizers with climate-smart micronutrients needed for tomato production under harsh climatic conditions thus boosting flowering and fruit production. Enhanced tomato production protocols have also been developed. Training-of-trainers programmes for Agricultural Extension Agents on climate-smart agricultural practices are being carried out, followed by on-field engagements with farmers and farm monitoring exercises, to ascertain adherence to the FSRP protocols. As the fruits approached maturity, FSRP mobilizes direct market access for the farmers, by facilitating farmgate visits and engagements between tomato traders/transporters and the farmers.
